Accommodation_Wicklow Bray is a busy Coastal town and an attractive resort. You will enjoy a walk on the promenade along the beach. Bray is another town with a Martello Tower, although this one is private as it is a residence of Bono from rock band U2. Kilruddery House & Gardens (call 286 3405 for information) has an impressive orangery which is home to many sculptures. Bray is also the home ot Ardmore Studios, the centre of indoor movie production in Ireland. If you like walking, you should take the beautiful coastal walk which will lead you to Greystones over Bray Head. You can either choose to walk along the easy to follow path or to climb up to the cross which was erected in 1950. After having enjoyed wonderful views of the Great Sugar Loaf Mountain and of the coast, you will probably end up in Byrne’s pub in Greystones, right to the end of the path… South of Bray in Kilmacanogue, AVOCA HANDWEAVERS are a great local craft and garments shop. Not far from there lies the Great Sugar Loaf Mountain on top of which you can climb in approximately 3 hours. On your way up you will discover the Rocky Valley. Like Blessington for Western Wicklow, WICKLOW TOWN is a good base to explore the surrouding area although it has very little to offer to the visitor, apart from its lovely harbour. A few things to do in Wicklow however: Wicklow’s Historic Gaol (call 61599 for information or visit www.wicklowhistoricgaol.com) which was famous for the brutality of its keepers, the ruins of the Black Castle which was built in 1169, and a walk on Wicklow Head or a trip to the fine beaches South of Wicklow Town (Silver Strand, Brittas Bay or Maheramore). Getting around the coast of Wicklow Bray has a train station where the DART train runs train South to Greystones and North to Dublin and Howth or Malahide. The main line from Dublin to Wexford and Rosslare Harbour stops in Bray and Wicklow Town. Dublin Bus lines 45 and 84 serve Bray. St Kevin’s Bus Service links Bray to and from Dublin twice daily. Bus Eireann has services between Wicklow Town and Dublin and Rosslare Harbour. |
