| West Belfast: |

You sure will be moved if traveling through the former battleground of West Belfast, which bears the scars of 30 years of unrest. Although the recent events’ memory still lingers in the air, the area is undergoing great redevelopment, giving its inhabitants hope for a brighter future. The walls in the area are filled with poignant murals, illustrating political passions and the conflict. This part of the city is not particularly dangerous but best avoided after dark. A colourful and |
lively place, Falls Road’s hospitality makes you forget the obvious signs of the past. The walk along the Falls Road from the city centre to Milltown Cemetery is pleasant, and you will pass several sites of interest on your way, such as the Divis Tower, the so-called Peace Line, the Solidarity Wall and its many murals, ending at Milltown Cemetery where lie the bodies of many republicans dead, of the victims of the 1918 flu epidemic and of the hunger strikers of 1981. Interesting murals are also to be found in the Protestant area of Shankill, although they are more militaristic. |
