Although Irish painters do not receive as much recognition as music and literature, the country's tradition of painting dates back to the illuminated manuscripts of the early Christian period such as the Book of Kells.

You will find in the National Gallery (Dublin) the finest examples of the Irish School of painting. Notable painters are Jack Butler Yeats (1871-1957), William John Leech (1881-1961), Francis Bacon (1909-1992) or contemporary artists Nick Miller or Sean Scully.

A lot of

murals can be admired especially in Northern Ireland (Belfast and Derry) and retrace Ireland's most recent political history.
