Unfortunately mainly a military firing range and home to a prison, Magilligan Point is however worth a detour. The huge sandy beaches of Magilligan Strand and Benone Strand are great spots. The Martello Tower which stands on the point itself was erected in the early 19th century in case of a French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. A car ferryu will take you to Greencastle in County Donegal. Downhill was originally built in the late 18th century as a palatial home for the Bishop of |
Derry. The building, now in ruins, bears the same name as the town and stands on a cliff top. The magnificent landscaped gardens of Downhill Forest lie below the house. Musenden Temple is also worth a visit, a small building which was the bishop’s library or, as some say, a house for his mistress. |
