The Cuilcagh Mountains are the main feature of the landscape in this remote part of county Cavan, although they are not highly visited. BALLYCONNELL is more than anything the perfect base if you want to explore the ‘Cavan Panhandle’ (name given to western Cavan because of its shape –long and narrow). South of Ballyconnell, the remains of a ring fort stand at BLACKLION, in which a stone hut that served as a kind of Turkish bath or sauna can be viewed. You will come across other examples |
of these between Dowra and Blacklion. It is noteworthy that Blacklion is located at the end of the Cavan Way and also on a section of the Ulster Way. |
