| Inland county Antrim |
|
|
| Less
visited by tourists than the scenic coast road, this agricultural part
of the county nonetheless has a few points of interest. Antrim Town is
nowadays quite bleak and unattractive but still boasts interesting
remains of the past. |

Town are Pogue’s Entry, the early 19th-century Barbican Gate, Antrim Castle Gardens and a bit further out of town, Steeple Park. Ballymena is mostly protestant and houses the Ecos Environmental Centre (call 25664400 for information or visit www.ecoscentre.com) which provides many information about environmental issues such as alternative energy sources and sustainable technology. On St Patrick’s Day, the 438m-high peak of Slemish gets crammed with pilgrims as the hill is associated with St Patrick, who supposedly tended goats on its slope. Gracehill is an elegant Georgian village which is home to a number of protestant escapees from Moravia. The church unusually has separate entrances for men and women. |
