Getting
to Dublin and away is very easy as it has the major international
gateway airport of the country. Aer Lingus (www.aerlingus.ie) is the
main Irish airline but low fare airline Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) is a
serious competitor. A large number of European and International
airlines have offices at Dublin Airport.
Ferries are also an option to travel to and from Ireland. Irish Ferries
and Stena Line operate from Dublin Port and Dun Laoghaire,
travelling
between Ireland and Wales, England and France.
Buses are a good way to travel around Ireland as Bus Eireann’s network
covers nearly every remote part of the island (call 836 6111 for
information or visit www.buseireann.ie). For information about trains
call 836 6222 or visit www.irishrail.ie. Public Transport in Dublin is
widely used although the traffic is a huge issue in the city. Buses run
approximately from 6am to 11.30pm every day, starting a bit later at
weekends (call Dublin Bus on 873 4222 for information or visit
www.dublinbus.ie). You can buy your ticket on the bus but you have to
give the exact fare to the driver or you will be given a receipt for
reimbursement (for this you will have to go to the main office on
O’Connell St). You also have to state your destination to the driver as
fares are calculated according to stages. A selection of daily, weekly
and other passes are also available. Late-night buses (Nitelink) run
throughout the week. The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) is a train
that runs along t6he coast from Malahide/Howth to Bray/Greystones (call
836 6222 for information or visit www.irishrail.ie). Suburban rail
services will take you further North to Dundalk or South to Arklow, or
inland as far as Mullingar. Taxis are also widely used and can be
hailed on the streets or you can wait for one at a taxi rank in the
city cenre (O’Connell St, College Green or St Stephen’s Green). Be
prepared to join a long queue of waiting fellows at night and at
weekends, even booking one by phone can be a challenge!
