was once a tollgate. The area around is called Westgate. You will find good information about the history of Wexford at the Westgate Heritage Centre (call 46506 or 42611 for information). Churches Selskar Abbey dates back to the early 12th century and Henry II did penance in this church for the murder of Thomas á Beckett. The ruins should be accessible when the Westgate Heritage Centre is open or you can get the key from the guardian at 9 Abbey St. St Iberius Church has a Renaissanc-style frontage and a Georgian interior. A number of 18th century monuments are to be found in the gallery (call 22936 for information). The Franciscan Friary (call 22758 for information) was first erected in 1230 but was set on fire by Cromwell and most of the present building is 19th century. |
