Accommodation_Sligo Although he died in the South of France (Menton), WB Yeats’ body was interred at DRUMCLIFF, the same town where St Colmcille had established a monastery in the 6th century. From this monastery parts of a round tower are left and an 11th-century high cross can be admired in the churchyard. Overlooking the area, BENBULBEN is at 525m the most westerly of the Dartry Mountains. GLENCAR LOUGH bears a beautiful waterfall and is a great place for fishing and walking. |
19th-century LISSADELL HOUSE (call 071-916 3150 for information) is a particular Greek Revival style mansion well hidden in the woods. Whether you like its exterior or not, the interior of the house is one to be seen. A visit to INISHMURRAY ISLAND can prove a bit of a challenge as there is no regular boat service nor harbour on the island. It is however an interesting place to visit, where you will be able to see the ruins of three churches, of beehive cells and open-air altars. The old monastery dates back to the 6th century and amazing pagan relics have been found. CREEVYKEEL GOORT CAIRN is very well preserved and dates back to approximately 2,500 BC. |
