Accommodation_Mayo The quiet village of CONG was the setting for The Quiet Man, a 1951 Hollywood movie with John Wayne, which made its fame. A cottage is dedicated to the movie jn an attempt to re-create the set. The ruins of Cong Abbey have kept a few pieces in good conditions (carved doorway, windows, decorations…) The area around Cong has a lot more to offer though. A number of caves are to be found, amongst which Pigeon Hole, Ballymaglancy Cave, Captain Webb’s Hole or Horse’s |
Discovery. The area also features circles and graves. The Giant’s Grave is located near the Pigeon Hole. Other sites include the Cong Stone Circle and the Ballymacgibbon Cairn. The village of Neale and Inchgoill Island in the centre of Lough Corrib are also worth a visit. |
