Accommodation_Leitrim CARRICK-ON-SHANNON has a great location over the river Shannon and is a highly popular boating centre. The Ballyconnell-Ballinamore Canal was reopened in 1994, thus completing the last section of the Shannon-Erne Waterway. The latter consists in 382km of navigable canals and loughs between Limerick and Belleeks (Upper Lough Erne). Apart from its aquatic attractiveness, Carrick-on-Shannon also has an interesting architecture, mostly 19th-century buildings. |
Examples are Hatley Manor, the Old Courthouse or Market Yard. The Tourist Office (call 962 0170 for information or visit www.leitrimtourism.com) is located on Old Barrel Store, The Marina and is open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday from April to October. The main interests in the town are Costello Chapel, supposedly the smallest chapel in Europe, which dates back to the late 19th century. You can ask for the key at the tourist office if the chapel is locked. Boating and Fishing amateurs can contact Carrick Craft on 01-2781666 for cruisers hiring, or Moon River on 962 1777 for cruises on the Shannon. Also, at the beginnings of August, the Carrick Rowing Club (call 962 0532 for information) organizes a regatta which attracts many people. For a well-deserved pint after a boating day, you can try Flynn’s Corner House at the corner of Main and Bridge St, or the sea-floating danceclub Moon River on The Quay. |
