quiet part of the county is perfect for driving.
CASTLECOMER is a pleasant town on the River Dinin. Up until the mid
1960s, Castlecomer was a centre for anthracite mining, Europe’s best at
the time. Around Castlecomer, Butler Castle in Ballyragget has a square
tower still in great state. Frequently visited DUNMORE CAVE (call
056-67726 for information) is divided into three parts. In 1973,
excavations lead to the discovery of the bodies of at least 44 |
people.
History has it that they are the bodies of women and children left to
suffocate in the cave smoked by the Vikings, while the men had been
captured as slaves.
GETTING AROUND NORTHERN KILKENNY *
There is a Bus Eireann bus stop outside Houlihan’s in
Castlecomer Buggy’s Coaches runs a service from Kilkenny
to Castlecomer. A service from The Parade in Kilkenny will also drop
you at Dunmore Cave. |
