is at the same time an old-fashioned place and a great cultural centre.

Sightseeing and Visiting Kilkenny Castle (call 772 1450 for
information) stands on a bend of the river Nore. This splendid fortress
came into existence in 1172. Still undergoing renovation works, the
castle is home to the Long Gallery and the Butler Gallery where
portraits and paintings are to be admired. It is surrounded by some 20
hectares of parkland.
St Canice Cathedral (call 776 4971 for information or visit
www.stcanicecathedral@eircom.net) is an early |
English Gothic style
building which dates back to the 13th century. Outside, the round tower
is in quite a good state apart from its missing crown. The black habits
of the Dominican monks gave its name to Black Abbey. Although it has
been restored, there are still pieces of ancient archways visible.
Rothe House (call 772 2893 for information) is a fine example of a
merchant’s house. Local artefacts are displayed in the museum which you
will find in the house. The Smithwick’s Brewery (call 772 1014 for
information) can be visited although it seems that its owner do not
really encourage visitors.
High quality exhibitions of Irish crafts are on display at the National
Craft Gallery (call 776 1804 for information or visit www.ccoi.ie).
Other interesting places to view are the Black Freren Gate, Butter
Slip, Shee Alms House and Grace’s Castle, and many more…
Entertainment A walking tour is a great way to discover
Kilkenny City. Tynan Tours (call 087 265 1745 for information or visit
www.tynantours.com) organise nice guided walks along the small streets
and pedestrian areas.
Kilkenny hosts a number of festivals throughout the year,
such as the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival from late May to early June or
the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
The city is not famous for its pub life but there are pubs
still so rest assured that you will be able to enjoy a pint! |
