The
centre of the county is ideal for walking.
Famous Irish potteries are located in BENNETTSBRIDGE: Nicholas Mosse
Pottery (call 972 7105 for information or visit www.nicholasmosse.com)
and Stoneware Jackson Pottery (call 972 7175 for information or visit
www.stonewarejackson.com). The Nore View Folk Museum (call 972 7749 for
information) has many local items on display.
KELLS is not of a great interest to the visitor apart from Kells
Priory, an impressive
monastic site. No guided tour is organised and
there is no trace of a rope or of a restriction. The site is completely
open to the visitor, at any time. South of Kells are a round tower and
a high cross which supposedly indicates the grave of a 9th century high
king. Southwest of THOMASTOWN lie the ruins of Jerpoint Abbey (call 792
4623 for information). Stone carvings are visible in the church walls
and in the tombs. 3km North of Thomastown, Kilfane Glen & Waterfall
is a charming place to visit, 6-hectare gardens in which a decorated
thatched cottage is of interest. INISTIOGE, as a peaceful,
picture-perfect little town, has a film history as scenes from Circle
of Friends of Where the Sun is King have been shot there. The 10-arched
stone bridge over the Nore is typical. Woodstock Park, on Mt Alto,
allows to a great view of the valley below. The stone bridge at
GRAIGUENAMANAGH is 6-arched and runs over the river Barrow. The town is
located at the foot of 516m Brandon Hill and has a picturesque
location. Duiske Abbey (call 24238 for information), now completely
restored, was once the largest Cistercian Abbey of the country.
PS : GETTING AROUND CENTRAL KILKENNY: Some buses operating between New Ross and Kilkenny stop at Inistioge, but Central Kilkenny is mainly a walking area and far better reached by car…
