Accommodation_Kerry TRALEE might not be as picturesque as other towns in Kerry but it has lovely Georgian buildings and many places of interest to the visitor. Founded in the early 13th century, Tralee holds every year in August the Rose of Tralee Festival, a 40 year old beauty contest at the end of which the Rose of Tralee is chosen, who must be Irish by birth or ancestry. The Tourist Office (call 7121288 for information or visit www.shannon-dev.ie) will provide you all |
information about sites to visit and the Post Office is located on Edward St. A notable museum is Kerry the Kingdom Museum (call 712 7777 for information) which is located in the Ashe Memorial Hall. The museum is about Irish history, focusing on Kerry. From May to September a train leaves Ballyard Station and makes the journey from Tralee to Blennerville on the steam railway which was in operation between 1891 and 1953. For pubs and live music entertainment, Castle St is the best area of town. Not far from Tralee visitors can access Crag Cave (call 7141244 for information) which was discovered in 1983 only. Ardfert’s main interest is its cathedral and the remains of a Franciscan Friary, both dating back to the 13th century. LISTOWEL is a pleasant town although it doesn’t have a lot of attractions. St Mary’s Church and Listowel Castle are however worth visiting. Carrygafoyle Castle lies near Listowel, above the Shannon Estuary. |
