A
popular destination for a weekend by the seaside, counties Wexford and
Waterford are the warmest and driest of Ireland. But walking and
climbing are also two great activities to do in counties Wexford and
Waterford.
A visit to the Waterford Crystal Factory (call 373 311 for information)
is almost compulsory as Waterford Crystal is nowadays one of the
world’s most famous luxury brands. Opened in the late 18th century and
later closed for almost 100 years,
the factory’s business started to
take a new start around 1947, the existing factory opening in 1971.
Once a mint, an arsenal and a prison, Reginald Tower is the oldest
complete buildling of the country, built in the 12th century by the
Normans. It was at that time the city’s main fortification. For
exhibits and artefacts, pay a visit to the tower museum (call 873 501
for information).
The Mall is the name given to an 18th century street built on reclaimed
land. Along the mall are several building of interest such as the City
Hall, the Theatre Royal and the Bishop’s Palace. The Granary houses the
Waterford Treasures, a truly hi-tech museum exhibition (call 304 500
for information). On exhibition is a thousand years of urban history.
Churches
Christ Church Cathedral (call 8774 119 for information) is the only
neo-classical Georgian cathedral in Europe. It was built on the site of
a Viking church.
Other churches to be seen are French Church, once an elegant Franciscan
church (ask for the key at 5 Greyfriars St) ; Blackfriars Abbey, the
Holy Trinity Cathedral which dates back to the late 18th century ; St
Patrick’s Church and the lovely Rice Chapel (call 874 390 for
information).
