Accommodation_Wicklow This part of the county consists more of rich pastures than of wilderness and rugged slopes. BLESSINGTON, although of little interest to the visitor, is nevertheless a good base to explore the area. For sports lovers, the Blessington Sports Centre (call 865 092 for information or visit www.blessingtonsports.com) proposes a variety of activities on the Blessington Lakes site. Not to be missed is RUSSBOROUGH HOUSE, a magnificent stately home dating back to the |
18th century (call 865 239 for information). The house having often been robbed along the years, one of the many owners of the house, Sir Alfred Beit, decided to hand over the most valuable paintings of the impressive collection to the National Gallery. In return, the gallery lends paintings to the collection for exhibits. The only breathtaking scenery you will find on the western part of county Wicklow is at the GLEN OF IMAAL. There is a small folk museum in a small white cottage located on the Knockanarrigan-Rathdangan road. However the northeastern slopes of the glen are now mostly cordoned off as a firing range so be aware of the danger and do not ignore the red signs! Getting around Western Wicklow Dublin Bus runs regular daily services to Blessington on route 65. Bus Eireann bus No. 005 to/from Waterford stops in Blessington. |
