Accommodation_Sligo Not far from BALLYMOTE stands Balllymote Castle, a 14th-century building now covered with ivy. A Protestant church nearby is worth a visit. CARROWKEEL PASSAGE TOMB CEMETERY is a spectacular yet gloomy site where lie 14 cairns, dolmens and what is left from other graves. With great views on Lough Arrow, the site dates back to approximately 3,000 to 2,000 years BC. In summer in TUBBERCURRY, you can take part in the South Sligo Summer School (call 918 5010 for |
information) where music and dance are taught. The school takes place in mid-July in the normally quiet town. Many sites are worth a detour around LOUGH GILL, southeast of Sligo. Dooney Rock is a great place for stunning views on the lake and its islands. Near the southeastern shore lies Innisfree Island, a small and peaceful island made famous by Yeats in ‘The Lake of Innisfree’. Actually in county Leitrim, the ruins of Creevelea Abbey are interesting and the last Franciscan friary discovered in the country before the suppression of the orders. Despite the abbey being burnt down in the late 16th century, the monks managed to restore it completely and stayed there until the 17th century. Also located in county Leitrim, Parke’s Castle (call 071-64149 for information) is a three-storey castle by the lake. |
