| Population |
The total population of Ireland counts approximately 5.6 million people. The Great Famine and the diaspora which ensued have caused this figure to drop considerably (there were about 8 million inhabitants before the Famine). The population of the Republic of Ireland is around 3.9 million, of which approximately 1.1 million are concentrated in the area of Dublin, capital of the Republic and its largest city (after come Cork, Galway and Limerick). Ireland has a very young population as 41% is aged under 25. The early 1990s saw a rise in immigration, being returning Irish or immigrants from Britain and other EU countries or North America. Refugees from Eastern Europe and Africa are also important immigrating communities. |
