15km Atlantic Drive on the ROSGUILL PENINSULA is probably one of the
most amazing thing to do in the area. The scenery on the peninsula is
amazing, whether you explore it driving, cycling or even walking. |
Accommodation_Donegal West of Rosguill lies the FANAD PENINSULA, which is the second-most northern point in the county. Places worth a visit on the western side of the peninsula are Carrowkeel, Knockalla Fort and the Kildooney portal tomb. The eastern side of the peninsula is much more interesting though. The Heritage Town of Rathmelton dates back to the early 17th century and has elegant Georgian Houses. The ruins of Tullyaughnish Church have great Romanesque carvings in the |
eastern wall. Rathmullan is equally peaceful. The heritage centre in Rathmullan (call 915 8229 for information) will delight those deeply interested in Irish History. For safe swimming, the sandy beach at Portsalon is ideal. 8km from there is Fannad Head, which you will reach via a great scenic drive. It is on the INISHOWEN PENINSULA that you will find the northernmost point of Ireland: Malin Head. The peninsula has varied and amazing landscapes, from desolate mountains to wonderful beaches. A European special Area of Conservation, the Inishowen Peninsula is home to many birds. Near Moville, the Cooley Cross & Skull House are worth a detour. Other towns on the way to Inishowen Head are Muff and Greencastle. Around Inishowen Head, a few ancient sites can be visited, especially around Culdaff, amongst which Clonca Church & Cross, Bocan Stone Circle or the Carrowmore High Crosses. Malin Head lies on the top of the Inishowen Peninsula, where you will find the northernmost point of Ireland: Banba’s Crown. Places to visit around the area are Carndonagh, Ballyliffin, Clonmany and Buncrana. South of Buncrana are ancient sites also worth a detour. |
