Laganside - Belfast

The Laganside Project aims to redevelop the centre of Belfast. Many buildings have already been completed and plans are to redevelop Victoria and Custom House Squares in the future.
Clarendon Dock has several buildings of interest. The Italianate
Harbour Commissioner’s Office dates back to 1854 and features many art
pieces inspired by Belfast’s maritime history. Sinclair’s Seamen’s
Church (call 90868568 for information) is halfway between a church and
a maritime museum.
Custom House Square is planned to be redeveloped. The elegant
Italianate Custom House was built between 1854 and 1857 and has a
waterfront sculpted with portrayals. Queen’s Bridge is an ornate
piece
of fine architecture.
The first stage of the Laganside Project was Lagan Weir, which has
contributed to the improvement of the water’s quality. Once a
sewer-like area, the waters now see salmons, sea-trouts and eels
migrating up the river. The enormous Odyssey Complex is a huge sporting
and entertainment venue, including a science-centre, a sports arena, a
multiplex cinema, a video games centre as well as many bars and
restaurants. The W5 science centre (call 90467700 for information or
visit www.w5online.co.uk) will delight children of all ages. The major
site of the Laganside Project is Lanyon Place, dominated by the
impressive Waterfront Hall (call 90334400 for information or visit
www.waterfront.co.uk). Buildings in the area include the neoclassical
Royal Courts of Justice and the pleasant Victorian St George’s Market
(call 90435704 for information) which is the oldest market still in
operation in Ireland, dating back to 1896.
