Accommodation_Clare This part of the county has a gentler landscape and many farms and small villages, which can prove somewhat bland compared to the rough coastline and the rocks of the Burren. Shannon Airport is the second-largest airport of the country. BUNRATTY’s main point of interest is its castle, although it is a very touristic place invaded by tourists during the high season. A folk park is attached to the castle, making it a fun medieval attraction. If you’d like to visit |
Bunratty Castle & Folk Park (call 3610611 for information) you can purchase a joint-entry ticket. The castle dates back to the early 15th century and has been completely restored more recently. Here too you can book a medieval banquet (call 360 788 for information) which will take place in the magnificent Great Hall. The folk park is the reconstruction of a traditional Irish village. Nestled between the banks of Lough Deirgeirt and the Slieve Bernach Hills, KILLALOE is a picturesque town, typical of Clare. It is linked to Ballina in county Tipperary via a 13-arch bridge over the river Shannon. St Flannan’s Cathedral (call 376 687 for information) was built in the 13th century over another church from the 6th century. For more information about the cathedral and about local history, the Killaloe Heritage Centre (call 376 866 for information) proves very useful. The Scariff road from Killaloe to Mountshannon runs along Lough Derg and is a pleasant drive. On the way you will pass Beal Ború (an earthen mound) and Griananlaghna Fort on Cragliath Hill. Located on the banks of Lough Derg, MOUNTSHANNON is a pleasant town with a harbour busy with yacht and cruisers in summer. Holy Island is about 2km offshore from the town where one of the county’s finest early Christian settlements has to be seen. The road North to county Galway heads through the inland area know as the Clare Lakelands. |
