Dublin History

Accommodation_Dublin

In
early Celtic times a few habitations could already be found on the
banks of the river Liffey. At that time the town was given the name of
"Baile Atha Cliath" (Town of the Hurdle Ford). By the 9th century and
after the Vikings had come to Ireland, the town had become a permanent
settlement and gained its name of "Dubh Linn" (Black pool, describing
the point where the Rivers Poddle and Liffey met in a black pool). The
city expanded during the 18th century when
richer people started settle
North of the river. However from the 19th century up and by the 1970s,
Dublin had become a decaying city, partly due to the union with Britain
and later the Easter Rising. It is not before the entry of the Republic
of Ireland in the European Union (EEC at that time) in 1972 that Dublin
started to regain its vitality and growth.
