Accommodation_Donegal Useful Information The Tourist Office (call 972 1148 for information or visit www.irelandnorthwest.ie) is located on the Quay and has the following opening times; 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday – noon to 4pm on Sundays in July and August 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday from September to June Sightseing and Visiting Donegal Castle (call 972 2405 for information) was built in 1474 and is still quite impressive. Inside, information panels retrace the history of the |
castle. The Obelix which stands in the Diamond was erected in the memory of the work of four Franciscan monks who wrote the Annals of the Four Masters, retracing Celtic history. Entertainment Donegal Bay Waterbus (call 972 3666 for information) will take you on a boat tour which will take you around the major points of interest. Fishing is a popular activity but permits are required. You can get a permit for the Eske at Doherty’s (call 972 1119 for information). In summer, the Donegal Town Summer Festival proposes many activities, from singing to storytelling. Most music pubs are to be found on Main and Upper Main Sts. For information about events in the area, pick up a copy of the Donegal Democrat on Thursdays. Close to town is the Donegal Craft Village (call 972 2228 for information) where you will find several art and craft workshops, from pottery and crystal to garment and jewellery. AROUND DONEGAL TOWN LOUGH ESKE (meaning ‘Lake of the Fish’), is a great location for walking and cycling. From the impressive Blue Stack Mountains, the views on the lake are stunning. The great sandy beach at ROSSNOWLAGH will make an excellent beach and surfing holiday. The gardens around the Donegal Historical Society Museum (call 985 1342 for information) are pleasant and charming. Hilly and lovely BALLYSHANNON also makes a good base for exploring the area. The Ballyshannon Folk and Traditional Music Festival (www.ballyshannonfolkfestival.com) is a great celebration of music. Although it has become a quite unattractive seaside resort with amusement arcades and too many souvenirs shops, BUNDORAN still is a surfing mecca, actually one of the finest spots in Europe. Every year, the annual Irish National Surfing Championships take place at Tullan Strand, just north of the town centre. For more information you can visit www.isa.ie, which is the website for the Irish Surfing Association. |
