One
of the most popular destinations of visitors to Ireland, CASHEL’s only
true attractiveness lies in the massive Rock of Cashel and the
religious buildings around.
The Rock of Cashel (call 61333 for information) is actually a massive
green hill on top of which stand ancient fortifications. It is really
impressive to see this ‘rock’ emerge above the town when you are on the
road. It was used as a base for the kings and churchmen who ruled over
the region. The site comprises of several |
buildings: the Hall of the
vicars choral, the Cathedral, the Round Tower and Cormac’s Chapel.
Other sites are to be visited in Cashel, although not as impressive:
Hore Abbey, the Brú Ború cultural centre, the Cashel Heritage Centre
and the Cashel Folk Village.
Not far from Cashel are the ruins of Athassel Priory, which date back
to the early 13th century. |
