| Growing
and booming, Belfast could quite surprise the visitor who does not
expect such a vibrant city with interesting architecture and sights. |
Quite a young city, Belfast developed around the site of a late 12th-century Norman castle. By the 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to the Industrial Revolution, Belfast had become a powerful town with a growing population. After WWI and with the partition of Ireland, Belfast became the capital of Northern Ireland, thus acquiring a new status and role. However decline quickly set with the beginning of the Troubles, and it is only since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement that the city has |
| started to redevelop and regain hopes for a brighter future. |
