Accommodation_Clare DYSERT O’DEA is an early Christian site on the Corofin road. The site dates back to the 8th century and has a church and a high cross which date back to the 12th century. Not far from there O’Dea Castle is a 15th-century building where you will find the Clare Archaelogy Centre (call 065-6837401 for information) In 1854, what is called the Great Clare Find was found at QUIN. At that time, the most important discovery of prehistoric goldwork in Ireland was made. |
Only a few pieces though are on display at the National Museum in Dublin as many items were sold and melted down. Quin Abbey (call 684 4084 for information) is a Franciscan Friary founded in 1433. KNAPPOGUE CASTLE (call 061-368103 for information) stands at a short distance from Quin and still has its original walls. As a little extra and an unusual experience, you could book a medieval banquet (call 061-360 788 for information). The CRAGGAUNOWEN PROJECT (call 061-367178 for information) is a re-creation of ancient farms and dwellings, of a ring fort. Real artefacts are also on display. Kids will enjoy the experience. |
