Accommodation_Laois Located in the heart of Ireland, county Laois and the surrounding counties do not have any border with the sea. Although little explored, county Laois has some nice places to visit and the unspoilt charm of the Slieve Bloom Mountains is a must. Nothing much to visit in the administrative and service centre of PORTLAOISE. It is locally famous for the large mental asylum and maximum-security prison. Sitting on top of a limestone outcrop, the Rock of Dunamaise is |
an interesting sight and offers spectacular views. Steam enthusiasts will love the Stradbally Steam Museum & Narrow Gauge Railway (call 0502-25154 for information or visit www.irishsteam.ie). Emo Court (call 0502-26573 for information) is quite an usual house with a green domed which is accessible through an avenue lined by giant sequoias. Other villages of interest are Portarlington, Mountmellick, Montrath, Abbeyleix, Timahoe and Durrow. The deserted Slieve Bloom Mountains culminate at 528m (Mt Arderin). On a clear day, you can see the highest points of the four ancient provinces of Ireland. The Slieve Bloom Way is 77km long. |
