Ireland is one of the first european destinations for angling. The country
houses many rivers, lakes and kilometers of preserved coastline. The
marine fauna in Ireland is varied, partly because of the difference of
temperature between Irish coastal waters. The Gulf Stream warms the
waters in the South and West, while they are colder in the North and

Fly fishing is widely practised around the Western Loughs (Corrib, Mask
and Conn). Many infrastructures such as B&Bs and boats for hire are

advisable to have a local guide accompany you as the lakes can be
dangerous. Information on fishing is available from Bord Fáilte and the
Northern Ireland Tourist Board. They both propose booklets on this
activity. The Central Fisheries Board publishes several useful guides
for angling. In the Republic of Ireland, you will need a state rod
licence if you wish to fish salmon or sea trout. This permit is
available from the local fishing shop or from the Central Fisheries
