The
Royal Musical Association is the second oldest musicological
association in the world. It was founded in 1874 ‘for the investigation
and discussion of subjects connected with the art, science, and history
of music’. The RMA began life as the Musical Association, and became,
by Royal Command, the Royal Musical Association in 1944. Today, its
activities are twofold: it holds meetings at which papers on musical
research are read and discussed, including an annual conference, and it
is |
an active publisher of musical scholarship. Some of the most
distinguished musicologists, performers, and composers are members of
the RMA, and the Association also does much to support the work of
postgraduate music students in universities and conservatoires across
the UK and Ireland. The registered address of the RMA is the York Gate
